Hurricane Relief Work

Hello everyone

In this weeks post my selected photos are not from downtown New Haven but instead from my travels throughout the island of Puerto Rico while providing hurricane relief efforts.  My pictures are a reflection of my mood at the moment of capture and symbolize a deeper connection that I feel with my ancestral land.

The fire hydrant picture was taken on our first day of travel while we stopped at a street vendor for some food.  I, as the fire hydrant, seemed out of place.  The fire hydrant was placed on a wooden deck which oversaw the side of a mountain. Our relief work had yet to begin.

That evening while I came across a trio of palm trees that immediately captured my attention.  The roots depicted in the image are a reflection of the roots I too have deeply ingrained in the island of Puerto Rico.  I edited the image to brighten the palm trees while contrasting the remaining area.

The following pictures are depicted in black and white because it is a reflection of my mood throughout the effort. You will note the second photo is darker than the first. A further reflection of my mood throughout the day.

Then when I felt full of despair this ray of light lifted my spirit...

On forward with the work that we were there to do! The following pictures of the mass destruction Hurricane Maria left behind.

Lastly, I depart with a simple image of a droplet of water cradled by a leaf. My interpretation, as water is the key to all life, is that Puerto Rico too will as the green leaf, be vibrant and full of life in the years to come.

Hi everyone,
I hope you had a great week. I'm feeling really under the weather (the flu) but I didn't want to miss out in posting this weeks assignment even if I wasn't able to give 100%. Below is my perspective on buildings and trying to fill the frame. It was really gloomy today taking these photos and I thought it would be nice to represent that in the way I edited them. Thank you for reading.
Gaby

Here are my six best photos. I tried to take pictures throughout the week to have a good variety of images. They are a water feature, my front door, sidewalk, picture in a restaurant, lounge at work, and brick wall at work. I did use filters on a few to make them more interesting.

These are my 6 best photos out of 10. I chose to edit a few of them black and white while enhancing the color of others. I decided to take pictures around the college, at my job, and downtown. I really enjoy randomly coming across things that I find worth taking a picture of, between the unique shadowing or just angles.

Hello everyone here are the photos I choose . I love the black photos but unlike Paul Strand I was unable while taking my photos to capture a picture with a shadow. I guess I was taking them at the wrong time if day.

Hi everyone! Sorry for the post a little later in the week- I started a new job and have been getting acquainted with my new schedule and then I had trouble with posting my assignment to the correct blog but I have been so excited to start getting into the course with professor Nevins! I've taken Digital Photography with him and it was really fun for me. I am a senior at Albertus majoring in Psychology, currently working for a health district. I love art, DIY projects and the outdoors (when it's warm), I also love photography though I am no professional. I decided to take a different kind of picture as my self-portrait, using my iPhone 7+. I edited the photo the leaves in my hanging plant would pop out more and be greener. I will be using my Nikon for photos moving forward but to start this was a bit easier. I look forward to learning more about photography and getting to see everyones beautiful photos and progress throughout the course.
Thanks for reading,
Gaby Reyes

Deadline each week

I take attendance each week on Monday morning around 9 am for week posted the previous week.  Do be sure to post each week as the college requires me to take attendance.  As you know, there is a very strict policy regarding attendance... If you accrue 2 weeks of absences, then the college withdraws you from the class... ouch.

Do look ahead for next week and begin shooting your first assignment, Introduction to composition, using a "built" subject matter... not nature. Move in close, fill the frame, avoid sky in the frame.  Most of all, pay attention to light and how it works with your focal point.

Post your best, edited 6 images by next Sunday night or before.....

Intro week 1

Hi all,

I am hoping that this time is the charm.  I have been having some issues logging in since I am a returning student to Professor Nevin.

This class is going to be great, I learned so much the last time I took his photography course!

Anyway, my name is Natasha Rivera-LaButhie, I am 33, a wife, mom of 4, full time employee and online only student.  I am at Albertus in pursuit of my Bachelors in Business Management.  My goal in this course is to build upon the last and to learn new tricks and tips in photography.  I look forward to seeing everyones art and hope everyone enjoys mine.  I am hoping this course will give me some pointers on photoshop.  I'm not proficient with it and I really would love to be. Otherwise, I took another course with Professor Nevin because I truly enjoyed it.  I found the class to be very beneficial and it was therapeutic to me as it gave me the opportunity to get out into nature.  While it is not summer or fall as it was when I first took the course and I prefer not to be out in the bitter cold I'm happy to do whatever is required as I know it will refine my photography skills.

Disclaimer ***This is not my best photo however, I have been in and out of the hospital this week with my infant including an ambulance ride.  Excuse the outward appearance of lack of sleep. I am still helping her battle her asthma and cold.

Happy mod all,
N
